Tech and Install Part 1: Technical and Installation Notes

Technical and Installation Notes

Its Not Owned by Me?

This really only applies to iHub supplied units.

Because the RAK Hotspot has been provisioned and registered to you and your selected install address, the setup procedure through the Helium app will indicate it is owned by someone else.  However, this is normal....its already been set to be owned by you though iHub.

Opening Ports for Internet Access

If the miner refuses to go online, or goes offline periodically, or shows a Relayed status on the explorer, you may need to open the following ports on your router.

  • 44158 - for network communications (this may be the only one required)
  • 22 - for support and firmware updates
  • 443 - for support and firmware updates

See more information here:

Otherwise seems plug and play.

Syncing and Picking Up the Network

May take a good 24 hours to fully sync and catch up to the blockchain.

Give it another good 24-48 hours in any one location before moving it to test placement with the physical location.

Max witnesses are 25 per unit, may take 7-10 days to effectively communicate with and build up the witness list.

Data Usage and Other Technical Details

Uses 20-30gb per month on the wifi…about equal to watching 2 streaming movies.

If units are within 300 meters of each other, the reward scale starts to drop, based on the number within that 300-meter zone.

Uses the 915mhz frequency, which is regulated by the FCC as safe for all organics.  Its also the same kind of frequency that has been used for cordless phones for decades.

Lightning Arrestor for Ourdoor Antenna Installations

All outdoor installations should have a lightning arrestor installed to guard against static buildup at the antenna damaging your hotspot or other electronics.

There is a great article on this here: Lightning Arrestor in 30 Seconds

Do I Need to have a Smartphone?

In order to hook up to WiFi, yes.  Because you configure the WiFi connection in the Helium app.

If you hook up directly to an ethernet cable, then it will be done automatically within the hotspot itself.
